1. What for the "con" in construction--
Con artist are conducting scams everyday in the construction industry. These cons will fool you and come in many different disguises. They will act like your friend, tell you how much money they will save you, and make you promises of unrealistic low prices to close a deal. They will tell you that they are a licensed contractor.

2. When hiring from the classifieds--
The classified section of the newspaper is where many unlicensed contractors will advertise their services. They will use words like "licensed and insured" and "Free Estimates" to entice you.

3. "Licensed and Insured" really means--
The contractor has earned a contractor's license and carries the required and necessary insurance. Generally, this contractor will be registered with your local building department.

4. Are Handyman licensed and insured--
Handyman are not contractors and many times their business card will say that they are licensed and insured and they will advertise home improvement services. If you hire a handyman do not allow them to do work that is regulated by the State or your local government.

Be very cautious when looking for a contractor on craigslist. Many of the stories about shoddy work and
